Upcoming artists-in-residence: Gathered Collective

Gathered Collective: Charli Gerry, Claire Paul, Anna Seymour

Gathered is a collective of three emerging women artists’ Claire Paul, Charli Gerry and Anna Seymour, who live and work on Gadigal and Darkinjung Country. Together they explore ways of relating to the natural world that embody a slowness and presence in the now. Such forms of existence seem critical during a time defined by hyperactivity and extraction from the Earth. They engage in walking and foraging practices to embrace a deep observation of ecologies; documenting encounters with plants, fungi & landscapes through written, paper-based & textile works. The end results are ever changing and constantly evolving, as are the organic materials which comprise our artworks. Collectively their Gathered creative practices seek to embrace a deeper understanding of the natural world and gather with non-human beings.

During our residency at Gunyah, we will engage in walking and foraging practices in North Arm Cove and extending into surrounding Worimi Country. These interactions will be documented and translated into various works in textile, movement, pine-hole photography, writing and paper-making.

Anna intends to work with organic textile-based materials to demonstrate the interconnectivity of ecologies. She aims to engage with materials which decompose over time and are diagrammatic in form.

Charli plans to think through mycelium - as a relational process - to unearth the web of connections that bind the beings, cycles, rhythms, lands of the surrounding site. Guided by mushroom foraging and observation, documentation will take form in movement, writing, paper-making and photography.

Claire will explore applications of pinhole photography, foraging and paper-making. Naturally sourced water will form the solute for plant coffee-based photograph developers, whilst foraged plant matter will provide the basis for handmade paper pulp.
