About Gunyah artist-in-residence program

Gunyah

Gunyah* is a unique three bedroom house situated on the secluded shores of North Arm Cove, Port Stephens. Nestled in a bushland setting with its own deepwater frontage overlooking the magnificent waterways of Port Stephens, Gunyah offers an idyllic retreat to produce artwork or pursue creative research.

The architect designed split-level building with its ‘pole-house’ construction, timber paneling and casual furnishings creates a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. The sundeck at treetop level catches the sea breeze and overlooks the water, providing a bushy backdrop from which to read, sketch or converse, and observe the resident possums, birds and dolphins.

In the cooler months, the open fire place brings warmth to the interior where cosy lounges are a perfect place for curling up at the end of the day. For collaborations or small group projects, the Gunyah becomes your own unique meeting space, a tranquil place in which to exchange ideas and develop your creative projects.

*Gunyah is an Aboriginal word meaning resting place or place of shelter
